Ixiaro is the only JE vaccine licensed in the UK, well-tolerated, effective, and suitable for adults and children from 2 months of age.
Ixiaro is an inactivated vaccine given as two doses over 28 days, or 7 days if time's tight. Boosters at 12 months and 10 years maintain protection.
Mild soreness, headache, or fatigue usually clears within days. Serious reactions are rare. We complete a full eligibility check before vaccinating and discuss any allergies beforehand.

No. The JE vaccine is most important for those spending time in rural or agricultural areas, travelling during monsoon season, or staying for extended periods in endemic regions. Your clinician will assess your itinerary and give you a clear recommendation.
Each dose of Ixiaro costs £110. The full two-dose primary course costs £220. No separate consultation fee applies when the vaccine is administered on the day.
A rapid Day 0 and Day 7 schedule may be available for closer departures. This is off-licence for those under 18 or over 65; your clinician will discuss suitability during your appointment.
The initial course requires a booster at 12 months for ongoing risk. Adults aged 18–64 may need another booster at 10 years. Your pharmacist will provide timing based on your plans.
Yes, Ixiaro is licensed from 2 months of age. Infants (2 months to under 3 years) receive 0.25 ml, while those 3 and older get 0.5 ml. It is not for children under 2 months.
No. The Japanese Encephalitis vaccine is not available on the NHS and must be obtained privately. We offer it as a private service at our Chatham clinic with same-day availability for the first dose.
