// Diseases Overview

What Is Hepatitis B and How Dangerous Can It Be?

Hepatitis B is a viral liver infection with serious long-term consequences if untreated.

How Hepatitis B Is Passed On

Hepatitis B spreads through blood and bodily fluids, often via unprotected sex or shared needles. Highly infectious, it survives on surfaces for a week, posing risks during medical emergencies.

Signs and Symptoms to Watch Out For

Often symptomless, Hepatitis B can cause fatigue and jaundice. While most adults recover, some develop chronic infections that lead to serious liver damage, including cirrhosis or cancer.

// Vaccine Options

Which Hepatitis B Vaccines Do We Offer at Our Medway Clinic?

Two vaccine brands are available at our Chatham clinic: Engerix B and HBvaxPRO.

Engerix B

GSK's Engerix B is a recombinant Hepatitis B vaccine for all ages. Adults 16+ can use a rapid 21-day schedule (0, 7, 21 days), or standard (0, 1, 6 months) and accelerated (0, 1, 2 months) options.

HBvaxPRO

HBvaxPRO, by MSD, offers standard (0, 1, 6 months) and accelerated (0, 1, 2 months) schedules for all ages. Your clinician will help choose the best plan for you.

Side Effects You Should Know About

Side effects are usually mild, like soreness or fatigue, fading within days. Please tell your clinician about any allergies or health concerns before your appointment.

// Eligibility

Should You Get the Hepatitis B Vaccine Before Travelling?

// Corporate Vaccine

Corporate Hepatitis B Vaccine for Employers and Their Teams

Protect your staff with our flexible corporate Hepatitis B vaccination programme, designed for workplaces with blood or needle exposure risks.

If your employees are at risk of contact with blood or needles, UK law requires you to offer them protection against Hepatitis B. Since most GPs do not cover these work-related vaccines, private clinics like ours step in to help.

Whether vaccinating one new hire or an entire department, we provide flexible scheduling and clear records for your files. For high-risk roles including healthcare, emergency response, waste work, or tattooing we can also arrange post-vaccination antibody blood tests.

While you remain responsible for conducting the workplace risk assessment, we take care of all the clinical work, scheduling, and paperwork to make the process simple and efficient for you.

// Risk

Who Is at Greatest Risk of Hepatitis B Exposure While Travelling?

Destination, planned activities, accommodation type, and personal health all shape your individual risk level.
Risk Group
Why They Are at Higher Risk

Travellers requiring medical or dental care abroad

Treatment in settings with poor sterilisation practices carries a direct blood-borne exposure risk

Long-stay travellers and expats

Extended time in high-prevalence regions significantly increases cumulative risk across multiple potential exposures

Healthcare workers and medical volunteers

Regular direct contact with blood and bodily fluids in clinical settings in affected countries

Aid workers in humanitarian settings

Working in areas with limited sterile medical equipment and high local rates of Hepatitis B

Those planning tattoos, piercings, or acupuncture abroad

Unsterilised needles and equipment are a direct transmission route in many countries

Backpackers and budget travellers

More likely to seek medical care in lower-resource settings where sterilisation standards cannot be verified

Travellers with pre-existing liver conditions

Existing liver disease significantly increases the severity of Hepatitis B if contracted

Frequently Asked Questions

How many doses of the Hepatitis B vaccine do I need?

The three-dose course follows various schedules based on age and travel urgency. Common options include the standard (0, 1, 6 months) and accelerated (0, 1, 2 months with a 12-month booster) plans. Patients 16+ can use a very rapid 21-day Engerix B schedule. A clinician will determine your best option during appointment.

Each dose costs £50. The full three-dose course costs £150 in total. No separate consultation fee applies when the vaccine is administered on the day of your appointment.

Healthy adults typically receive lifelong protection from the three-dose course without routine boosters. Healthcare workers and clinical students, however, should get a booster approximately five years after their initial course. Your pharmacist can advise if this applies to you.

No. If you have been recently exposed via blood, sexual contact, or a needlestick, seek urgent specialist assessment. Contact your GP or visit A&E immediately; do not book a routine vaccine appointment.

Yes. If you have already had one or two doses of the Hepatitis B vaccine elsewhere, we can administer the remaining doses to complete your course. Please bring any vaccination records and let us know your previous dose dates when booking.

Inactivated vaccines like Engerix B and HBvaxPRO are not known to risk unborn children. However, vaccination during pregnancy is decided individually based on risks and benefits. Your clinician will discuss this during your appointment.
