Diphtheria is transmitted through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. Close contact in crowded conditions increases the risk of transmission considerably.
This infection creates a thick grey membrane in the throat, obstructing breathing and swallowing. Severe cases involve bacterial toxins that can damage the heart and nervous system.
Polio is transmitted through contact with the faeces of an infected person, generally through contaminated water or food. It can also be spread through respiratory droplets in areas with poor sanitation.
Most people infected with poliovirus have no symptoms. Around 1 in 200 infections leads to permanent paralysis of the limbs or breathing muscles.
They enter the body through cuts, wounds, burns or puncture injuries that have been contaminated with soil or animal matter. Even small wounds can be life-threatening, especially in the countryside.
Tetanus causes painful muscle spasms, especially in the neck and jaw. Tetanus can be fatal if not treated quickly.
Revaxis is a French combination diphtheria, tetanus and polio booster made by Sanofi Pasteur. A single injection offers protection for up to 10 years. Not recommended for children under 6.
Common side effects are mild and temporary, typically including headache, mild fever, or localised pain and swelling at the injection site.
Inform your clinician before booking if you have phenylketonuria (PKU), allergies to neomycin, streptomycin, or polymyxin B, or a history of severe reactions to DTP vaccines.

For most adults it’s a single booster injection. If you are not vaccinated or are not fully vaccinated, your clinician will give you advice about a full schedule.
£50 for the DTP booster (Revaxis) There is no consultation fee if the vaccine is given on the day of your appointment.
The Revaxis booster is effective for up to 10 years. Most travel health guidelines recommend a top-up every 10 years for travellers going to higher-risk destinations.
Childhood immunisations are a good start, but the protection from diphtheria and tetanus is not lifelong. If your last booster dose was more than 10 years ago, it is recommended that you have a top-up dose before travelling to medium- or high-risk destinations.
Revaxis is indicated for use in adults and children aged 6 years and over. Your clinician will advise you on the correct vaccine for your child’s age, as children under 6 require a different DTP-containing product.
Bring along your vaccination records if you have them. If you have no records, your clinician will review your history and advise the best way forward.
