// Diseases Overview

What Jet Lag Is and Why Long-Haul Travel Disrupts the Body

Jet lag disrupts your internal clock when crossing time zones, causing fatigue and sleep issues.

The Science of Jet Lag

Circadian rhythms, driven by light exposure, align with your home time zone. Rapid travel across zones causes melatonin to release at inappropriate times, disrupting alertness and sleep patterns.

Common Symptoms and Recovery

Key symptoms include insomnia, daytime fatigue, irritability, and digestive issues. Recovery typically takes one day per time zone crossed, meaning long trips like Australia can cause over a week of impairment without treatment.

Melatonin 3mg; Supplied Under Patient Group Direction

Melatonin naturally signals sleep time, helping shift your internal clock to local time zones for faster recovery. Supplied for eligible adults over 18 after a required clinical appointment.

Behavioural Strategies That Work Alongside Melatonin

Sunlight exposure at your destination is powerful for resetting your clock. Adjusting your sleep schedule before your trip also helps your body adapt to new time zones faster.

Melatonin Side Effects: What to Be Prepared For

Common side effects include headaches and drowsiness; avoid driving or operating machinery if affected. Also, minimize alcohol and smoking, as they reduce the medication’s effectiveness and sleep quality.

// Changing Direction

Flying East vs Flying West Why Direction Changes Everything

Travel direction dictates jet lag severity and recovery. Melatonin timing strategies vary based on whether you are heading east or west.

Eastbound (UK to Asia/Oceania) : Flying east advances your body clock, often causing daytime sleepiness. To adjust, take Melatonin at local bedtime and seek morning sunlight.

Westbound (UK to Americas) : Flying west delays your clock, typically making adaptation easier. You may feel alert late at night; use Melatonin at local bedtime and evening light to synchronise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP for Melatonin?

No. Melatonin is prescription-only, but our clinic handles it through a private appointment, no GP visit required. We’ll just need to have a quick chat first to make sure it’s right for you

You’ll get at least 10, which covers five days for your arrival and five for your return flight. We’ll tailor the exact amount to your specific trip.

Take it at your normal bedtime once you arrive. Avoid taking it before 8 PM or after 4 AM local time, since timing outside that window can make the jet lag worse. We’ll give you a simple schedule.

Please let us know! Oestrogen can affect how your body processes melatonin, so we need to chat about your specific medications during your assessment to be safe.

If the standard 3mg doesn’t quite do the trick, you can double it to 6mg. Always stick to the lowest dose that works for you, and keep it to a maximum of 5 days per trip.

You’re welcome to use the service for up to 16 treatment periods each year. Each round trip counts as two periods (one out, one back).
