Is the cholera vaccine an injection?

No. The cholera vaccine we provide (Dukoral) is given by mouth as a drink. It is mixed with a sodium bicarbonate solution and taken in 2 doses 1 to 6 weeks apart for adults and children 6 years and older.

How much does the cholera vaccine cost at Medway Travel Clinic?

A dose of Dukoral costs £45. A full adult course of two jabs costs £90. The full course for children aged 2 to 5 is three doses and costs £135. Same-day vaccination No separate consultation fee

How far in advance should I have the cholera vaccine before travel?

Try to finish the course at least one week before you travel. The two adult doses are taken one to six weeks apart, so book your first dose two to three weeks ahead to leave enough time.

Do I need to avoid anything when taking the oral vaccine?

Yes. Do not eat, drink, or take any oral medicines for 1 hour before and 1 hour after each dose. Inform your chemist of any regular medications at the time of consultation.

Can children have the cholera vaccine?

Yes. Dukoral is for children aged 2 and older. Those aged 2 to 5 require a 3-dose course for 6 months of protection. A booster is needed within 6 months to maintain immunity; otherwise, the entire course must be restarted.

Does the cholera vaccine protect against travellers' diarrhoea?

Dukoral offers some protection against the Diarrhoea of Travellers caused by Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC). It is an added advantage in addition to its primary protection against cholera.
