// Diseases Overview

Meningococcal Disease: How It Works and Why It Moves So Fast

Meningococcal disease often triggers simultaneous meningitis and septicaemia, potentially causing death or permanent disability within hours of onset.

The Ways Meningococcal Disease Is Transmitted

Meningococcal disease spreads through close contact, coughing, or sharing food. Risks are highest in crowded settings like pilgrimages, dorms, and gatherings.

Early Symptoms Every Traveller Should Be Able to Spot

Watch for flu-like symptoms: fever, headache, stiff neck, or light sensitivity. A rash that stays when pressed needs emergency care.
// Vaccine Options

Men ACWY Vaccine We Offer at Our Medway Clinic

We offer Nimenrix, Menveo, and MenQuadfi to protect against strains A, C, W, and Y. Your clinician will select the most suitable vaccine based on your age and health history.

Menveo

Menveo, produced by GSK, is suitable for adults and children aged two and older. It’s a reliable single-dose injection offering protection against four meningococcal strains for your travels.

MenQuadfi

MenQuadfi by Sanofi offers identical protection to Nimenrix and Menveo in one dose for those aged two and up. Your clinician will confirm its suitability during your appointment.

Nimenrix

Nimenrix is a Pfizer-manufactured vaccine for adults and children aged two and up. This single injection provides effective protection against four common meningococcal strains.

Side Effects to Keep in Mind

Side effects are usually mild, like site soreness or mild headaches, resolving quickly. Please mention any known allergies or past vaccine reactions to your clinician before your appointment.

Groups That Face an Elevated Risk of Meningococcal Disease Abroad

Certain groups face a significantly higher risk of meningococcal disease based on destination, health status, age, and trip type.
Risk Group
Why They Are at Higher Risk

Hajj and Umrah pilgrims

Mass gatherings increase respiratory transmission due to close proximity.

Travellers to the Sub-Saharan meningitis belt

Regular epidemics of strains A and W occur in this region.

Students starting university

Communal living and shared social settings significantly raise exposure risks.

Those with asplenia or complement deficiency

Weakened immunity against Neisseria meningitidis requires specialist advice on booster intervals.

Backpackers attending festivals or large events

Close contact in high-risk areas increases the likelihood of encountering infectious carriers.

Long-stay travellers and aid workers

Extended stays in areas with high carriage rates increase cumulative exposure.

Young adults aged 16 to 25

This group has higher meningococcal carriage rates and socialises in settings that increase transmission risk.

// FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the MenACWY vaccine mandatory for Hajj and Umrah?

Yes. Saudi Arabia mandates MenACWY vaccination for Hajj and Umrah visas. It must be administered at least 10 days before arrival; we provide same-day official certification.

Individuals aged 10–25 or first-year students under 25 who haven’t had the vaccine may be eligible for free NHS doses via their GP. Please verify this before booking privately.

The MenACWY vaccine costs £50 and is a single-dose vaccination. No separate consultation fee applies when the vaccine is administered on the day of your appointment.

The MenACWY vaccine provides protection for up to five years. If you are a frequent traveller to high-risk destinations or are making repeated pilgrimage trips, your clinician will advise on the appropriate time to revaccinate.

We stock Nimenrix, Menveo, and MenQuadfi and administer whichever is available and most appropriate for your age and health profile on the day. All three provide equivalent protection against strains A, C, W, and Y and your clinician will confirm the brand used.

If you have received a MenC or Hib/MenC vaccine in the last four weeks, a one-month interval is required before MenACWY can be administered. Please inform the pharmacist when booking so your appointment can be scheduled at the correct time.
