Understanding Hepatitis A and B: Why Travellers Need to Know Both

Two different infections, two different transmission routes, one liver at risk, here is why combined protection matters before you travel.

Hepatitis A: Essential Traveller Facts

Hepatitis A is a viral liver infection commonly spread via contaminated food and water. It remains a frequent risk for UK travellers in many global destinations.

Transmission

Spread occurs when faecal matter is ingested, often through undercooked shellfish, untreated water, or poor food hygiene. Risks are high in areas with sub-standard sanitation.

Symptoms

Appearing two to six weeks post-exposure, symptoms include fatigue, nausea, fever, and jaundice. Recovery can take months, and no specific antiviral treatment exists.

Hepatitis B: Essential Traveller Facts

Hepatitis B is a highly infectious liver virus transmitted through blood, sexual contact, or unsterile medical equipment. It persists on surfaces for seven days.

Transmission

The virus spreads via infected bodily fluids, often through unprotected sex, needles, or medical procedures in poorly regulated settings. Emergency care abroad presents a significant risk.

Symptoms

Initial infection is often asymptomatic. If symptoms occur, they include nausea, jaundice, and abdominal pain. Chronic infection in some adults leads to severe liver damage.

// Vaccine Options

Twinrix: The Combined Hepatitis Vaccine We Provide in Medway

Twinrix provides dual Hepatitis A and B protection in one course, simplifying your vaccination programme by combining two separate schedules.

Paediatric Options: Twinrix and Ambirix (Ages 1–15)

Twinrix Paediatric requires three doses at 0, 1, and 6 months. Alternatively, Ambirix offers a two-dose course given at 0 and 6–12 months. Your pharmacist will recommend the most suitable option for your child’s timeline.

Twinrix Adult (Ages 16+)

Twinrix Adult follows a 0, 1, and 6-month schedule. Adults 18+ can use an accelerated course (0, 7, 21 days plus a 12-month booster), though this is unavailable for 16–17-year-olds. Clinicians will recommend the ideal timing based on your age and travel plans.

Potential Side Effects

Side effects are typically mild and short-lived, commonly including injection site soreness, redness, swelling, headache, fatigue, or a low-grade fever. Inform your clinician of any allergies, previous vaccine reactions, or medical conditions before your appointment.

// Risk

Who Carries the Greatest Risk of Hepatitis A and B Abroad?

Risk varies by destination, trip type, activities, and personal health history, these groups face a particularly elevated chance of exposure to one or both infections.
Risk Group
Why They Are at Higher Risk

Travellers to South and Southeast Asia

High infection prevalence across the region, including popular tourist spots

Travellers visiting friends and relatives

Frequent consumption of local food and stays in areas lacking standard hygiene

Long-stay travellers and expats

Long-term exposure to local food, water, and medical facilities in high-risk nations

Backpackers and budget travellers

Increased contact with local resources and higher likelihood of needing low-resource medical care

Healthcare workers and medical volunteers

Direct exposure to blood, fluids, and contaminated food/water in high-risk settings

Those seeking medical or dental care abroad

Risk of blood-borne exposure where sterilisation standards may be inconsistent

Travellers with pre-existing liver conditions

Prior liver conditions significantly raise the risk of severe infection complications

I had a fantastic experience at Medway Travel Clinic while getting everything sorted for my trip to South America. The clinic is modern, clean, and well-run, which really helped put me at ease. Booking was simple, and there were plenty of appointment slots to choose from, even at short notice. I was especially impressed that they had all the necessary vaccines in stock, so I could get everything done in one visit. Mandeep was incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to explain each vaccine and what to expect, which made the whole process smooth and reassuring. Highly recommended for anyone planning overseas travel!

I cannot fault this service. The whole pharmacy team are very helpful and approachable. Mandeep, the pharmacist dealt with my travel queries and vaccinations. I was very unsure as it was my first time going abroad but he talked me through everything and explained which vaccines I needed. The jabs didn't even hurt! He was amazing. A1 service. 100% recommend. Thank you.

Cannot recommend Mandeep enough. He is knowledgeable, helpful, and put me at ease. I would definitely go to him in the future - his advice was in depth and his role as a pharmacist prescriber means he can offer more than other pharmacies.

There is one pharmacy here, some very odd opening hours and long lunch break, some parking spaces behind at £2:40 minimum for first hour, if no spaces "walk the gauntlet" through Chatham High Street to get there!!
// FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Twinrix and how is it different from separate Hepatitis A and B vaccines?

Twinrix is a 2-in-1 vaccine protecting against Hepatitis A and B. It uses a 0, 1, and 6-month schedule, matching the separate Hepatitis B course while covering both infections in one series. For travellers requiring dual protection, this combined course is often more practical than two separate vaccine sets.

No. Twinrix is unsuitable for post-exposure care. If recently exposed via needles, blood, or sexual contact, contact your GP or visit A&E immediately for specialist assessment.

Yes. Children aged 1–15 can have Twinrix Paediatric (three doses) or Ambirix (two doses, 6–12 months apart). Your clinician will recommend the right option.

A full course offers up to 25 years of Hepatitis A protection and long-term Hepatitis B immunity, rarely requiring boosters for healthy adults. Start early to ensure completion before travel.
